Holding on to the past keeps you trapped. When you let go that allows for growth and change.
You cannot move forward if you are holding on to the past.
I remember there was a time when I was totally living in the past. I was literally re-living through painful situations. It was like torture and I was doing it to myself. The worst part is that I didn't realize that it was happening.
I was unhappy, repeating mistakes, and stuck! You may not even realize you are living in the past. The people around you could be encouraging it. How? By bringing up old drama and continuing to talk about it. The more life you give to the past the more it will live on. Letting go of the past gives you the opportunity to change, grow, heal, and move forward in life.
Looking back I definitely couldn't see it. I was so used to the negativity and pain, that to be without it was almost unnatural. In other words, we get so used to the bad stuff, we don't know how to let go or function without it.
Things happen throughout life that we have little to no control over. There are also those things we do due to plain old bad decision making. No matter the experience we do have control over how we choose to respond.
Part of life is living and the other part is learning. With that you have to be forgiving of others and yourself. When you hold on to the past you rob yourself of life. You aren't present and amazing things pass you by because you're looking down instead of up and back instead of forward.
Holding on to the past doesn't serve you. It doesn't allow you to heal or grow. You will miss the lesson. Life will pass you by. Living in the past robs you of today. Time is out most precious resource. How are you investing it? Make sure that you put your energy into today and tomorrow.
Are there things from the past we want to remember? Heck yea! I want to remember the birth of my girls, how I felt when I launched Positive Forward Movement, when I skipped away from my last Corporate job.
The good things, our wins are what we should cling to! The past hurts, struggles, and challenges are what we should take lessons from. Positive Forward Movement was founded out of the experiences and lessons of my past and the experiences of others I've encountered along the way.
You are not alone in going through challenges and I'm not saying to forget your past, but I am saying to learn from it and move on. You deserve and have every right to live a full life. Don't let anyone, not even yourself hold you back.
