Relationships Have Expectations
Too many? Not Enough? Too High? Too Low? Or none at all?
What you expect from the other half of the relationship and from the connection in general. It seems simple enough, yet expectations are tricky, especially when it comes to dating. But know that expectations aren't exclusive to dating, all relationships have them.
With my oldest daughter, I expect her to listen and talk to me about things that occur in her life. I also expect that she does well in school and to balance that with time with her friends. With my youngest, I expect that she will make a mess with her toys. Knowing this ahead of time prevents me from stressing about it later.
When I meet a guy and give him my phone number, I expect that he will call and not rely on texting to communicate with me.
What are your expectations?
Common things we look for in relationships are openness, honesty, communication, support, and quality time. Do you know what you expect from your partner? The things we expect can help shape our relationship and create boundaries. Take some time to think about your expectations in your love life,
Are your expectations being met?
When your expectations are not met that leads to disappointment, miscommunication, detachment, resentment, and even cheating. You can't be satisfied in a relationship that doesn't meet your expectations. Long before a relationship actually ends you mentally check out, before physically leaving.
“You can't be satisfied in a relationship that doesn't meet your expectations.”
Expectations need to be realistic. They can set a guideline for you to measure. If you don't feel your needs are being met, then you can voice your opinion. Also that's a good time to evaluate your expectations.
If they aren't being met see if they are too high. Or is it that no one knows what you expect from them? Be sure that you are clearly communicating your needs. There are also times where people will fail to meet your needs because they simply don't care.
Decisions, decisions, it seems like a hard conversation to have when you are not happy with what you are receiving, still you must have that conversation.
This is why communication is key. In a relationship both parties need to have their needs met. This requires compromise and understanding. Relationships are about balance and compromise, giving and receiving.
