People often wonder how they can tell they are different. The best way is by considering are you the same person you were in a different time.
This is why regular self-evaluations are so important. It helps you to see what has changed over a period of time. The more you check in with yourself the easier it is to be honest about who you are and where you are.
It’s easy to mistake yourself for a failure because you may find yourself back in familiar waters. The same or similar situation that had you feeling stuck or down in life. Having the awareness to realize that you are in familiar waters is great, that means you have the ability to choose differently.
Let me explain…
The Human Condition
We are human, we do ‘make mistakes’ and we also are so comfortable with what is familiar, even if it is not good for us. Let’s use credit for an example.
If you had good credit and then made some money mishaps that landed you in bad credit. You learned some things along the way. Since then you may have repaired your credit. You learned things about credit cards and finances that allowed you to improve your money management skills and boosted your credit score.
Fast forward and you are over your head in debt again. It’s so easy to beat yourself up and say how could I. I should have.. and all the other judgmental bs and negative self talk. We aren’t doing that. Nope! Not. At. ALL.
Retrace Your Steps
If you find yourself back in an uncomfortable situation that is familiar to you. Take some time to retrace your steps. Be open and honest about how you got there. Think about the things you learned the first time around and what you’ve learned this most recent time around.
Be Gentle with Yourself
Give yourself some grace and realize that it is okay. It doesn’t make you a bad person, it makes you human having a human experience that we all deal with. So maybe it’s not credit for you. It could be a relationship, anger, food, shopping…anything.
It is okay. You are okay.
Celebrate the fact that you woke up to your actions and see that they are no longer in alignment with who you are. It’s because you are different. You aren’t the same person even if you made the same mistakes.
