When my daughter says, “Mommy I can't find insert a random item” My first response is ‘did you use your looking skills?'. Sometimes rather than looking, she'll kind of scan for items that are literally RIGHT THERE. So one day I explained to her what looking skills were. I realized that not everyone has the same skill set, but skills can be learned.
So I showed her how to look for something. Revisit the places you were, look under other items, you really have to look. The same thing goes with listening. This time I'm not talking about my daughter, but us adults. Listening is a skill. We can hear things all day long and not have listened to them.
Communication is vital to the success of any relationship. That includes listening. This is the part that we tend to miss! We are so busy getting our point across and preparing for our next epic statement, that we totally miss what is being said. As a Mom, Friend, Coach, I have to listen. If I am not listening, I'm not able to help.
How often do you really listen to what is being said?
Do you interpret what is being said through your own filters or do you take the message in?
Using listening skills allows true communication to take place, growth, and healing. There are so many things that can distract us from listening. Like our minds!
